Just four days after holding its first official practice of the 2012-13 campaign, Toledo posted a workmanlike 75-52 victory over NAIA foe Northwestern Ohio on Friday evening in Savage Arena.
"I thought we were a little rusty at times but I was pleased with our effort overall," Toledo Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. "We're coming together and getting better even though we've only had three practices. Our defense is ahead of our offense right now but that's what you expect this early in the season."
Freshman C Nathan Boothe led the Rockets with a game-high 15 points, with junior G Reese Holliday and sophomore G Julius Brown joining him in double figures with 13 points each.
"Once Nathan settled in he was able to make some nice post moves," Kowalczyk said. "He didn't finish early but then he got comfortable and gave us some offense inside."
After shooting just 31.4 percent from the field in the first half, Toledo posted a 51.5 FG% in the second stanza to finish with a 41.2 mark for the game. UT knocked down 7-of-27 three-point attempts with senior Dominique Buckley connecting on 3-of-6 attempts from behind the arc.
Toledo held a decided advantage in the turnover department, forcing the Racers into 26 miscues while committing just 10 of its own.
UT held a 35-21 lead at the half and extended its lead to 59-36 with 10:37 to play.
The Rockets' leading returning scorer, Rian Pearson, did not play due to a coach's decision.
Toledo opens its 2012-13 campaign in two weeks when it travels to Chicago, IL to face Horizon League foe Loyola (IL). Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.
