2nd Magnesium fire at MagReTech this year

Posted: Updated:

BELLEVUE, Ohio (WTVG) -- For the second time this year, a fire at a magnesium recycling center lit up the skies overnight and sent smoke into the air over Sandusky County.

The fire started Friday around 10 p.m. inside of a trailer at MagReTech, Inc. Bellevue firefighters say paramedics examined one worker for injuries, but they did not take him to the hospital.

Authorities evacuated roughly a half dozen people who live near the plant.

According to its website: "MagReTech Inc. is a refiner/recycler of Class I magnesium and supplies high purity ASTM B93 alloys and tolling services to the diecast industry.

"In addition (the company) offers technical services and consultation regarding all aspects of magnesium and magnesium scrap handling, including Class II, III and IV solutions."

In March, 13abc was outside of MagReTech, near U.S. 20 and County Rd. 177, as a fire raged for hours. During that instance, the fire chief told us small fires inside of the Magnesium melting pot are common, but ones outside are few and far between.

Magnesium chemically reacts with water, forcing firefighters to use moisture-free "flux" to put out the flames. No word on what may have sparked today's fire.
