Students campaign for TPS levy

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Students from the Young Women of Excellence Group canvassed the "feeder" neighborhoods around Scott High School passing out fliers to encourage voters to say yes to Issue 20.

The girls are part of a mentoring group at Robinson Elementary aimed at giving students positive role models.

Angela Hickman-Richburg, the assistant principal at their school said, "It teaches them how to use manners and really be better individuals."

Toledo Public Schools are asking for a 4.9 mill levy, costing the owner of a $100,000 home $150 a year.

Superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko says asking for funding is an uphill battle.

"I wish we could do better. If people knew what was going on, I think we'd have tremendous support."

The schools share the ballot in Lucas County with several other agencies requesting funding and TPS leaders know that money is tight for many voters. But they hope voters are willing to give schools new funding. Despite a recent drop in the district's state rating, administrators say TPS is a work in progress.

Assistant Principal Angela Hickman-Richburg points out, "We have schools that were at the bottom and not in three years, they are at the top. It can be done."
