TOLEDO - The University of Toledo swimming and diving team won its season opener against Denison on Saturday afternoon, 199-96. Senior Carly Harter and junior Beth Rogers each won two individual events and were part of two relay victories. Freshman Kristen Nunnelly performed well in her career debut by winning all three of her events.
Saturday's performance also marked the first win under Head Coach Chris Peters.
"Our ladies came out strong today," Peters said. "They raced well as a team and I'm proud of their collective effort. I also have to tip my cap to our home crowd today. They we're awesome."
Peters has plenty to smile about after Saturday's dominance. Harter claimed the 200-yard freestyle at 1:52.20 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52:23. Rogers won the 50-yard freestyle at 24:28 and the 100-yard butterfly at 57:68. Both Rockets swam on the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay winners.
Nunnelly won the 200-yard butterfly in her first collegiate event, recording a finals time of 2:05.09. She moved on to take the 500-yard freestyle with a score of 5:02.77 and the 400-yard individual medley at 4:28.33.
Freshman Mary Dombkowski also notched her first-collegiate victory, racing the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:23.61.
Toledo (1-0) returns to the pool next Saturday at Eastern Michigan.
