High Wind and Lakeshore Flood Warnings Now In Effect

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

This Sunday evening, Hurricane Sandy is still about 280 miles east of North Carolina, but confidence is growing that the impact will be significant.  A HIGH WIND WARNING is now in effect for Lucas, Wood and Hancock Counties - and eastward, across every single county to the Delaware coast and up into southern Maine.  A LAKESHORE FLOOD WARNING is also now in effect for Lucas, Ottawa and Erie Counties.

The most intense wind, and the greatest risk for lakeshore flooding, will occur on Monday evening, Monday night and through the first half of Tuesday.

Winds will gust to near 60 mph near the lakeshore, and to near 50 mph south and southwest of the lake.  Farther west, a WIND ADVISORY is in effect for extreme western Ohio as well as Hillsdale County, Michigan, where gusts may reach 40 or 45 mph on Monday evening, Monday night and Tuesday morning.  A HIGH WIND WATCH is in effect from Hancock County to the south.

A FLOOD WATCH is in effect for Erie and Huron Counties, where 1" to 3" of rain is likely.  Less rain is expected farther west.

A STORM WARNING in effect for Lake Erie, where waves may grow to 20'.  Large Waves, combined with flooding, may damage some docks, piers and potentially some boats.

Finally, a GALE WARNING is in effect for the coast of Monroe County, Michigan.

Conditions will remain very dangerous, especially near the lake, through Tuesday, with truly quiet weather not returning until the end of the workweek.
