As the east coast hunkers down for Hurricane Sandy, families in this quiet West Toledo neighborhood are preparing for possible power outages. Donnell Saxton plans to stock up on food.
"I will be going out to get some extra water," said Toledo resident Donnell Saxton
"I'm concerned about a tree that's across the street from my home because there's been several cars wrecked from it," said Toledo resident Freda Carswell.
Freda Carswell lives in East Toledo, but was visiting her daughter. Carswell says she's put together an emergency power outage kit just in case her lights go out.
"Candles in a can, flashlight blanket, I got abasement so that helps," said Carswell.
American Electric Power suggest also keeping fresh batteries, a battery powered radio, candles drinking and cooking water, camping equipment , and a portable generator on hand.
"You want to make sure that they are well aired out not in a locked in space because of the fumes from the machines and you need to make sure they are properly stored so they won't cause feedback to the electric system and causing a hazardous situation for our men," said AEP spokesperson Shelly Clark.
American Electric Power has already sent crews East and some of those crews are on standby here in our area. If our area has wide spread power outages, AEP wants customers to remember never to touch a down line.
"Never touch a down line call your local law enforcement agency and or AEP Ohio. By calling your local law enforcement agency they can set up a barrier around that area until the AEP Ohio workers can get there and you don't want to touch," said Clark
