One listen to the Ohio Turnpike, and you know she's arrived. That's why the Ohio Turnpike Commission has placed a high wind ban on trucks on the toll road until 10 A.M. Tuesday. All triple, box type double and horse and boat trailers must stay off the turnpike. Mobile homes and high profile campers are also banned until winds calm down.
"We find a safe location to stop the vehicle," says Sgt. Robert Sellers with Ohio State Patrol. "And then we get them into a rest area to be parked until the high winds pass."
For the rest of the drivers, there are also common sense safety tips to keep in mind. Sellers says you need to be aware of others on the road, slow down and drive within your own limits. He also recommends motorists prepare to move from protected to unprotected areas, like moving beyond a bank of trees or a hill.
"You want to know before you go, you want to know what kind of conditions you'll be traveling in," recommends Sgt. Sellers.
Troopers don't expect the ban to go past the morning, but says it all depends on the path of the storm. For now authorities recommend vehicle take it nice and slow, especially high risk rides with a lot to lose. "The most valuable thing that people can do is just drive within their limits," says Sellers. "Know what your abilities are and drive within them. If you need to slow down, do that."
