Superstorm Sandy: local impact recap

Posted: Updated:
MARBLEHEAD, Ohio -

Superstorm Sandy is slowly weakening, but the massive storm packed a major punch in our eastern counties.  Northwest Ohio dealt with a sharp contrast, between the hard-hit locations east of I-75, and the more bearable breezes to the west.  Early this morning, the 13abc weather team measured a 79 mile per hour wind gust on the rocks at the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula.  Meanwhile, gusts only peaked barely above 40 mph near the Indiana state line.  A few thousand power outages were reported in the area, with the majority in Erie and Huron Counties.  New London, in Huron County received 5.17" of rain, while the Toledo Express Airport has had less than 0.50".  Just to our south, Bellefontaine, Ohio received 3" to 4.5" of snow, Monday night into early Tuesday morning, according to reports filed by the National Weather Service.  Massive waves didn't only stop shipping in Lake Erie, but also provided a dangerous but likely thrilling playground for a few experienced surfers at the Marblehead Lighthouse.

As the storm weakens and drifts north, conditions will slowly improve, through the end of the workweek.
