10 students taken to hospital after school bus accident

Posted: Updated:

Two bus crashes happened in Oregon Thursday morning. One sent several students to the hospital with injuries. That accident happened around 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of Wynn and Seaman.

It was a parent's worse nightmare. A school bus filled with students collides head-on into another vehicle, completely dislodging one of the front tires.

The bus was carrying 29 students from Clay High School. Ten students were taken to local hospitals. None of their injuries were serious.

The rest of the students were picked up by another bus and taken to school.

Authorities say the driver of a car went left of center. School officials say it was the bus driver's training and quick thinking that kept the students safe.

"The good news is no students were seriously injured, and our bus drivers did a tremendous job in handling the situation and being prepared," says Oregon Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Zalar. "They go through a lot of training, and this is one of those days you can feel good that all the training they do pays off."

Only about 20 minutes following the first accident, officials were dealing with another bus accident right down the road. However, that bus didn't have any students on board.

The bus was returning the garage when a vehicle pulled in front of it.

Superintendent Zalar says, all things considered, the district was extremely fortunate, escaping a situation that could have ended a lot worse.

The driver that went left of center was taken to a local hospital. Officials say that person will be cited.
