New student restraint rules worry educators

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's plan to regulate how educators seclude and physically restrain students is drawing criticism from schools that fear being overburdened, while parents and advocates of special-needs children say the policy could help protect youngsters.

The Columbus Dispatch reports more than a dozen school officials have written to the Ohio Department of Education about the draft plan to regulate schools' use of restraint techniques and seclusion rooms used to help calm students. The policy would require more documentation for such incidents and more staff training and would restrict the use of seclusion.

Schools argue the proposal would overburden them with training, testing and paperwork.

Children's advocates say student safety should take priority over those concerns. They say schools would benefit from better training on how to deal with challenging students.
