Niceville, FL - Sophomores Tomas Stillman and Nick Wong each won their opening qualifying round match in straight sets at the USTA Futures event on Friday. Sophomore Grant Adams also advanced to today's second round at the Baywater Blue Tennis Center after receiving a first-round bye.
"It was a solid start for us," UT Head Coach Al Wermer said. "Ben (Brocker) also played really well during his first two sets, but then lost his way in the final set. After only about four or five total hours of prep time on the clay court surface, we're getting more comfortable and each hour brings more comfort."
Stillman easily defeated James Arias, 6-1, 6-1, while Wong breezed past Raphael Werner of Switzerland, 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Ben Brocker played the toughest opening-round match for Toledo. He battled Japan native Daisuke Suzuki in three sets, eventually falling 7-6(3), 4-6, 0-6.
