Historical Election Day weather

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

This year, Election Day should be fairly tame, when it comes to the weather.  Temperatures will remain a bit below average for early November, but we won't be in record territory.  We'll have a cold start to the day, and a chilly afternoon with highs in the middle to upper 40s.  Sunshine early will give way to increasing clouds in the afternoon.

Over the past few decades, Presidential Election weather in Toledo has been fairly benign.  Looking back as far as the 1950s, we've had some breezy, cool and wet Presidential Elections, but no major storms.  After speaking with election officials in Lucas County, and visiting the Wood County courthouse to look into the books, turnout numbers didn't seem to be strongly correlated to weather, at least for recent Presidential elections.

However, on non-presidential Election Days, Toledo has had some true extremes.   On November 6, 1951, 4.2" of snow fell in Toledo.  The 1.15" of liquid equivalent precipitation that day made Election Day of 1951 not only the snowiest, but also the wettest in Toledo's history.

On November 4, 2003, Toledo warmed up to 80°.  On the other side of the thermometer, Toledo chilled down to a record cold 16° on Election Day of 1991.
