Lourdes Basketball Preview

Posted: Updated:

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes opens the home portion of its men's basketball schedule on Tuesday evening entertaining Kuyper at Tam-o-Shanter.  The Gray Wolves then return to the road, where they are playing five of their first six games overall, on Saturday evening as Lourdes travels to Gary, Ind. to face Indiana-Northwest.

Head Coach Andre Smith: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Andre Smith has a 30-35 (.462) record.  He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-1 all-time against Kuyper in a series that dates back to the Gray Wolves' inaugural 2010-2011 season.  The Gray Wolves defeated the Cougars 71-59 on Jan. 25, 2011 in Grand Rapids, Mich. before downing Kuyper again that season at home, 88-50, on Feb. 8, 2011.  Last year, Kuyper posted a 60-58 win over the Gray Wolves in Grand Rapids on Oct. 31, 2011 in the season opener for Lourdes.  Lourdes has never faced Indiana-Northwest on the hardwood.

Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves posted a 1-1 record at the Trent Allen Memorial Tip-off Tournament hosted by Spring Arbor.  Lourdes fell 74-63 in the opener against Windsor on Friday, as the Lancers connected on 15-of-31 from three-point range.  In the consolation game against Lawrence Tech on Saturday, the Gray Wolves jumped out to a 24-point halftime lead on the way to a 65-32 victory over the Blue Devils.

Scouting Kuyper: The Cougars have dropped two straight games following a season-opening victory over Lawrence Tech.  They lost both games over the weekend at the Maple City Hoopfest, falling to both host Goshen as well as Calumet.  Andy DeKam leads the way for Kuyper averaging 17 points per game after tallying double figures in all three contests.  Omar Haynes adds 14 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest for the Cougars, which are averaging 20 turnovers per contest.  Over the last two games Kuyper is allowing 92.0 points per contest.

Scouting Indiana-Northwest: The RedHawks enter the week having lost two straight following a 75-69 defeat against Indiana-Kokomo on Saturday.  IUN's lone with this year came in its season opener against Great Lakes Christian.  Devin Ellis leads the way offensively for Indiana-Northwest averaging 18.7 points per contest after pouring in 22 against Indiana-Kokomo.  Brandon Grubl has added 14.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per night thus far this year for the RedHawks.  Indiana-Northwest hosts Clarke on Wednesday evening before entertaining Lourdes on Friday night.

Home Openers: Lourdes is a perfect 2-0 all-time in home openers.  The Gray Wolves won their inaugural home game on Nov. 23, 2010 65-62 against Madonna.  Last year Lourdes posted a 62-59 victory in its first home game on Dec. 3, a WHAC victory over Siena Heights.

Record-Setting Defensive Effort: Lourdes set a school record surrendering just 32 points on Saturday in the victory over Lawrence Tech.  The Gray Wolves previously had allowed 45 points on three different occasions (Marygrove, Jan. 3, 2011; at Indiana Tech, Jan. 7, 2012; Aquinas, Jan. 21, 2012).

Quite a Blowout: Lourdes' 33-point victory over Lawrence Tech, 65-32, was the third largest victory margin in school history.  The Gray Wolves defeated Ohio State-Mansfield 105-62 on Nov. 8, 2011 and Kuyper 88-50 on Feb. 8, 2011.

Balanced Efforts: The 13 players that made the trip to the Trent Allen Memorial Tournament last weekend all had pretty balanced efforts.  All 13 averaged at least 9.5 minutes per contest, with no one playing more than an average of 25 minutes per game.  In addition, 11 of the 13 players averaged at least three points per game, with Corey Harvey leading the way with 10.5 points.

Crashing the Boards: Lourdes currently owns the eighth best rebounding margin in the country at +13.5 after controlling the glass this weekend.  Lourdes outrebounded Windsor 32-24 before grabbing 39 caroms and allowing just 20 in the victory against Lawrence Tech.  In fact, the Gray Wolves had 18 offensive boards, just two fewer than the Blue Devils entire rebounding total.

Getting to the Stripe: Twelve of the 13 players to see action last weekend earn at least one trip to the free throw line last week.  Only Tigana Cain failed to travel to the stripe.

Lourdes Tabbed Fifth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fifth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just ahead of Aquinas, and just behind Madonna.  Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2012-2013.

Harvey Named to All-WHAC Preseason Team: Senior forward Corey Harvey has been named to the All-Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Preseason Team in a vote of the league's head coaches.  A member of the WHAC All-Newcomer Team one season ago, Harvey averaged 12.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest.  He shot 41.7% from the floor while averaging more than 28 minutes per contest.

Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season.  Serving in the leadership role for 2012-2013 are Corey Harvey and Remy Fleurima.

This and That: Lourdes has made just one three-point field goal this season ... Remy Fleurima has handed out seven assists while committing just three turnovers thus far ... the Gray Wolves are shooting 46.6% from the floor and 75.6% from the free throw line.
