Lourdes Prepares for Spring Arbor

Posted: Updated:

Scouting Spring Arbor: The Cougars opened their season with a 68-63 overtime victory over Rochester last Thursday evening in their only action of the 2012-2013 season.  They are in the midst of a five-game homestand.  Carlie Newman led Spring Arbor with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Jessica Garrison added 11 points.  Ana Byrens pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

A Balanced Attack: Lourdes had five players score in double figures, and a sixth tally nine points, in the loss at Wilberforce on Saturday.  Lauren Tilden led the Gray Wolves with 13 points while Tiffani Blackman and Ty Ali each tallied 12 more.  Emily Orsini and Tarynn Hampton scored 10 points each while Tiffany Scott came up one point shy of double figures.  Ali leads Lourdes averaging 17.0 points per game while Hampton has tallied 13.5 points per night.  Tilden has now cracked double figures in the average column as well, scoring 10.0 ppg.

Crashing the Offensive Glass: Lourdes has averaged 16.5 offensive rebounds per contest this season, a mark that currently ranks 26th among all NAIA Division II schools.  The Gray Wolves pulled down 19 offensive caroms at Wilberforce on Saturday which led to 15 points.  Tarynn Hampton led the way with seven offensive boards, part of her nine total.

Making Free Throws: Emily Orsini and Ty Ali have combined to make 17 of their 18 free throw attempts this season.  Orsini is a perfect 5-for-5, with all five attempts coming at Wilberforce.  Ali is 12-of-13 on the season, making 6-of-6 in the opener against Indiana-South Bend before connecting on 6-of-7 at Wilberforce.  Tiffany Scott has also been proficient at the charity stripe early on this season, connecting on 6-of-8 from the line.

Positive Assist-to-Turnover Mark: Despite Lourdes committing 29 turnovers in the loss at Wilberforce, Emily Orsini did not commit a miscue.  In fact, she handed out two more assists after a career-high five in the opener, and now has seven assists and just three turnovers on the year.  She is the only Gray Wolf with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.

No Breaks Here: Lourdes has scored just two fast break points total in the first two games of the season.  On the contrast, the Gray Wolves opponents have registered 21 fast break points, including 16 from Wilberforce on Saturday.

Captains Named: Lourdes has four captains on the roster this season.  Serving in the leadership role for 2012-2013 are Lauren Tilden, Ty Ali, Tiffani Blackman, and Tarynn Hampton.

Lourdes Tabbed Ninth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in ninth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Indiana Tech.  Concordia (Mich.) was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2012-2013.

Hampton Named to All-WHAC Preseason Team: Junior forward Tayrnn Hampton has been named to the All-Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Preseason Team in a vote of the league's head coaches.  A member of the WHAC All-Newcomer Team one season ago, Hampton led Lourdes averaging 15.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest.  She shot 43.1% from the floor while averaging more than 31 minutes per contest.

This and That: All 10 Gray Wolves that have seen action this season have done so in both contests ... Ty Ali had five assists in the loss at Wilberforce ... Tiffani Blackman had four steals against the Bulldogs on Saturday.
