Friends plan to honor Katie Sheppard

Posted: Updated:

Its been a difficult weekend for those who knew Katie Sheppard, 29.

Friday, Katie didn't show up for work and her co-workers became worried and called police.  When officers arrived they found her dead on the front porch, covered up with a blanket.  Her husband, Kyle Sheppard, 29, was arrested in Canada and charged in her death.

"She was like a little sister to me," Stephanie Plocek said.

Plocek worked with Katie.  She describes her as a hard worker with a bubbly personality.  She's having a hard time coming to grips with her death.

"She is in heaven with Jesus right now," she said, fighting back tears. "I know that she is a beautiful angel and will be missed."

Now, Katie's loved ones are trying to celebrate her life, instead of dwelling on her tragic death.  They're planning a candle light vigil at her home at 1861 Rivard, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

"That house was supposed to be where she was safe and loved," Plocek said.  "I want people to go there and talk about her and share stories."

Plocek hopes Katie's story will remind others to be there for friends and neighbors because you never know what is happening behind closed doors.

You can also help Katie's family by making a donation to the Katie Sheppard Memorial Fund at any Fifth Third Bank.

Meantime, there is no word when Kyle Sheppard will be extradited to the U.S. to face the charges.
