Ohio vote could decide election

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio is in the national spotlight again, with the state appearing pivotal to deciding the outcome of the presidential race.

President Barack Obama is seeking to carry the state a second time and create a firewall against Republican Mitt Romney's hopes of unseating him.

Obama is looking to Democratic strongholds in northeast Ohio and the state's biggest cities. Romney is hoping for blowout results in southwest Ohio and the state's suburbs and rural areas.

Both sides poured major time and resources into the battleground state, campaigning frequently in the final days.

No Republican has won the White House without Ohio. The last president elected despite losing Ohio was Democrat John F. Kennedy in 1960. The last sitting president to lose Ohio was George H.W. Bush in 1992.
