Wood Co. voters face school funding decisions

Posted: Updated:

While the nation's eyes are on the Presidential race, Wood County voters face important local issues like funding schools.

In Bowling Green school leaders are asking voters to approve a .75% income tax. The district has already closed two elementary schools and cut teaching and administrative jobs.

Voter Terence Armentein says it's an issue of doing all you can for your community. "I think it's important to get behind your community any way you can. Whether it's supporting a levy or just getting involved."

Even after the polls opened, many were still rallying for support in Perrysburg for a levy that's been increasing each year since 2008.

Supporters like Shelly Predmore say a failed levy would mean larger class sizes. "It will probably detract from the quality of education. So we want to keep our class sizes down, teachers at the same locations and provide the same level of support for our students."

There are roughly 108,000 registered voters in Wood County. At least 19,000 voted early and a big turnout was expected.

Terry Burton of the Wood County Board of Elections said, " Four years ago we saw a big surge in the morning and then things kind of tapered off, I think early voting had a little bit to do with that. Certainly our early voting numbers were up, so we think that takes a little pressure off the polls. Heading to the polls is typically the best time to get in."

There are 66 voting locations and 97 precincts in Wood County.
