TOLEDO, Ohio -
Toledo's largest school district is heading back to
the drawing board. Voters rejected the Toledo Public Schools levy 52 percent to
48 percent. This marks the third levy defeat for the district.
District leaders said
both schools and the community were at stake. Now with voters saying no to Issue
20, parents are worried about their children's future.
"I think it's sad that it couldn't pass for
the kids," says parent Dawn Lerma.
"I'm upset," says supporter Larry Howard. "It's
gonna hurt the economy more."
TPS Proud was the slogan
of the latest levy campaign, but parents in north Toledo have been left disappointed.
Voters defeated the levy,
cutting out nearly $13 million in funding for the next 10 years.
School leaders knew the request
was an uphill battle. The district's state report card rating was recently
downgraded, and Ohio's
auditor is still investigating the district for alleged attendance scrubbing.
TPS leaders are meeting
in the coming weeks to decide what happens next for the district.
