Local Hostess bakery workers strike

Posted: Updated:

Local members of a bakers union are taking to the picket line. Members of Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Local 19 went on strike Friday night at the Hostess facility in Northwood.

They're among workers at several other Hostess bakeries nationwide picketing the company for imposing a contract rejected by 92 percent of the union's Hostess members in September.

The union president says Hostess "is making a mockery of the labor relations system," and members are striking "for all unionized workers across North America who are covered by collective bargaining agreements."

Hostess, which is in bankruptcy, released a response. It warns a widespread strike will mean liquidation if the company can't "produce or deliver products," and that would mean the layoffs of "most of its 18,300 member workforce."
