Kids organize run to help fight hunger

Posted: Updated:
LUDINGTON, Mich. -

Hundreds of runners took to the path outside of Monclova Elementary School, raising money to fight childhood hunger.

Anthony Wayne and Penta high School students involved in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organized the 5K run and walk.

Student Coordinator Halie Smith said, "We got a fantastic response. Everyone was coming up to me and saying the race was very well organized, and right now we have raised almost $3500  and that number keeps going up every time I go in there's more money in the box."

Donations of money and non-perishable food items were accepted.

The money raised goes to the national No Kid Hungry campaign. The food is headed to the Toledo Seagate Food Bank.

Teacher Teresa Nissen is proud of her students. "Above and beyond my expectations. It was awesome to be a part and just watch them work together and pull off an absolutely wonderful event."

Local sponsors of the race included Promedica/St. Luke's Hospital, Dave's Running and the Toledo Roadrunners.
