Coast Guard chopper saves fishermen from bay

JERUSALEM TWP., Ohio -

A Coast Guard chopper rescued two men from Maumee Bay Sunday afternoon after a day of fishing nearly turned deadly when their boat capsized.

Richard Carter and Greg Clark were fishing near Meinke Marina Sunday afternoon when they called 911 for help.

According to Lt. Joe Rozycki of the Coast Guard, "Someone had called 911 from their phone and said their boat was taking on water or sinking and they needed help. Then it cut out and when they tried to call back, they couldn't get hold of them."

Several boats and a helicopter were sent out by the Coast Guard and eventually the two men were found hanging on to their capsized boat and a rescue swimmer was deployed.

With water temperatures in the 40s, the men had a pretty close call.  After about an hour in the frigid water, Lt. Rozycki says hypothermia was setting in, but he thinks the fisherman will be all right.

Ambulances were waiting when the men were taken by chopper to Toledo Executive Airport. No word on their condition at this time.
