Davenport Ends Lourdes Season in WHAC Quarterfinals

Posted: Updated:

LIVONIA - Lourdes University saw its third season of collegiate volleyball come to an end on Friday afternoon as the Gray Wolves suffered a 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 loss to Davenport in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by Madonna at the Activities Center in Livonia, Mich.

"This is a rough way to end the season after playing so well over the last couple of matches," head coach Greg Reitz stated.  "Davenport played really well, you have to give them lots of credit.  We couldn't slow them down."

Davenport (31-5), winners of 14 straight matches, jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the opening set.  A 7-2 run capped with a service ace by Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo H.S.), pulled Lourdes within 15-12.  The Gray Wolves made it 21-19 after an Amelia Horton (Milan, Mich./Milan H.S.) kill, but the Panthers scored the final four points to take the opening set.

A 10-2 run by the Panthers early in set two gave Davenport a quick 14-4 lead and Lourdes was never able to recover.  Davenport hit .438 as a team in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Davenport again jumped out to a big lead in set three, scoring eight of the first nine points.  Lourdes fought back to within 9-6, and the deficit was again three at 15-12 following a block from Andrea Brown (Northwood, Ohio/Northwood H.S.) and Katie McKenty (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.).  The Gray Wolves would not get any closer though, and saw their season come to an end.

"It's always disappointing to end the season but all in all it was a positive one for us," Reitz added.  "We won just one conference match last year and this year we won five.  We hope to continue to take strides in that positive direction next year."

McKenty and Ali Mass (Walbridge, Ohio/Tiffin Calvert H.S.) led the way for Lourdes with six kills each.  Jimenez and McKenty each tallied eight digs while Allegra Recknagel (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion H.S.) tallied 22 assists.  Brown had a team-high four blocks.

Nicole Chase led Davenport with 11 kills while Sidney Rodriguez tallied 14 digs.

Davenport advances to Saturday's semifinals while Lourdes season ends with a 14-18 record.
