GARY, IND. - Lourdes University extended its winning streak to three straight on Friday evening, defeating Indiana-Northwest 59-51 on the road at the Savannah Center in Gary, Ind.
"It was ugly but we got the win," head coach Andre Smith said afterwards. "IU-Northwest stuck to their game plan and hung around. I'm happy we got a win, but I don't feel that we got better as a team tonight."
The Gray Wolves overcame a slow start offensively, shooting 60% in the second half to offset 19 turnovers in the contest. Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) led all Lourdes players with 11 points on the evening while Kedsede Desamour (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Coconut Creek H.S.) added nine points. Corey Harvey (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson H.S.) added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
"We got some good play from Ked tonight," Smith added. "James Brown and Robert Dukes also gave us a bit of a spark."
Lourdes trailed most of the first half, as the Gray Wolves started the game just 2-of-10 from the floor with six turnovers in the first eight minutes. The RedHawks never led by more than four tough, and a Davis lay-in just before halftime pulled Lourdes within one, 22-21, at the break.
Trailing by two early in the second half, Lourdes went on a 10-0 run to take an eight-point advantage 33-25 with 14:30 to play. The lead eventually grew to 11, 44-33, on a jumper by James Brown (Washington D.C./DuVal H.S.) before Indiana-Northwest clawed back into the game.
A 16-7 run by the hosts pulled the RedHawks to within 51-49 with just under two minutes to play, but Lourdes scored eight straight points down the stretch to secure the win.
Lourdes finished the night shooting 43.1% from the floor while Indiana-Northwest was held to a 33.3% shooting night. The Gray Wolves also forced 21 Indiana-Northwest turnovers.
Brandon Reyes led Indiana-Northwest (1-4) with 21 points while Baile Barnett added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Lourdes (3-1) will have eight days off before returning to the court next Saturday, Nov. 17, as the Gray Wolves open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play at Lawrence Tech. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Dearborn, Mich.
