Referee hears case again Asst. Principal

Posted: Updated:

A state-appointed referee is hearing TPS' case against Sandra Meeks-Speller this week.

Meeks-Speller is accused of using force to discipline students and using racial slurs.  Meeks Speller's family deny those allegations.

In August TPS Administrators asked the TPS school board to terminate Meeks-Speller.  Meeks-Speller asked the board to appoint a referee to hear the case.

In today's hearing the principal of Deveaux Elementary testified about complaints he that were filed about Meeks Speller, including putting students in headlocks and making racial slurs.

Meeks-Speller's attorney argued that the district violated her contract by not alerting her about these complaints that were in her personnel file.

Today more than a dozen supporters attended today's hearing, including NAACP President Kevin Bedford.  Bedford says TPS has treated the former assistant principal unfairly.  He urges the TPS School Board to reinstate Meeks-Speller.  The referee will give a recommendation to the board after the hearings this week.
