Toledo Police say a grandmother and uncle may have killed three children with carbon monoxide poisoning in an apparent custody dispute with the children's parents.
Toledo Police and detectives lined Harvest Lane near Laskey Monday afternoon, after a check the safety call led to a gruesome discovery.
Randy Ford, 56, asked for a safety check on his 54-year-old wife Sandy Ford. Shortly afterwards, police and fire units arrived on the scene. Ford stated he had returned home and found suspicious notes from his wife, son and grandchildren. He could not locate his wife and could not get into his garage.
"We got called here a little after three, we made entry in the garage and found five deceased people," Sgt. Joe Heffernan, Toledo Police, said.
Inside the garage was a Dodge truck running with hoses leading from the exhaust into a Honda Civic. Inside of the Honda were Sandy Ford, 32-year-old Andy Ford, 10-year-old Paige Hayes, 6-year-old Logan Hayes and 5-year-old Madalyn Hayes along with two dogs and a cat. All were deceased.
"It didn't look like the typical accidental carbon monoxide scene you would run into," Sgt. Heffernan said. "This appeared to be a little more than that."
The children were the grandchildren of Sandy Ford and Andy Ford was their uncle. All of the deceased lived in the home. The parents of the three deceased children, Mandy and Chris Hayes, were in the process of getting full custody of the children and it's believed that may have been the motive.
