The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on S. Custer Road east of Raisinville Road in Monroe Township, County of Monroe, State of Michigan.
Preliminary investigation reveals that Mr. John F. Chiotti, age 57, of Monroe, Michigan was operating a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck westbound on S. Custer Road in the left travel lane, when he struck two pedestrians that were standing in the roadway. It is unknown at this time why the pedestrians were in the roadway.
The pedestrians have been identified as Elizabeth J. Winter, age 18, of Monroe, Michigan and Nicole M. Holt, age 29, of Monroe, Michigan.
Ms. Winter died at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash. Ms. Holt was transported to Mercy Hospital Monroe, Michigan and later transported to St. Vincent's Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio where she is listed in critical condition. Mr. Chiotti was not injured in the crash.
Members of the Monroe Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office - Traffic Services Division along with Deputy Matt Brodie of the CARS Division. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call 734-240-7768.
