Northern lights light up Michigan

HILLSDALE, Mich. -

A solar storm hit earth last night and sparked the aurora across the higher latitudes. Normally the aurora is visible across parts of Canada and Alaska but last night the colors became much more intense than normal and pushed south of the US border. Numerous reports of the aurora came in across Michigan. The northern lights were particularly bright with curtains of red and green from areas north of Traverse City. Here is the scene a little further north in Whitefish Point Paradise, MI.

While the northern lights were not nearly as bright in southern Michigan they were visible on occasion between 11pm and 2am Tuesday night. A faint glow appeared as far south as Marysville, Ohio.

The sun is now approaching the peak of the solar cycle. During the solar peak there is an increased number of sunspots and solar storms which can lead to more frequent and vibrant displays of the northern lights across the United States.

    Toledo firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in Toledo. The fire broke out at a home on the 1100 block of Avondale just after 11:30pm Tuesday. Dispatchers tell us heavy flames are showing.
