Hostess liquidation deadline passes with no end to strike

Posted: Updated:

Hostess workers across the country are on strike, including about 125 employees in Northwest Ohio.

Local union members say they were given a 5:00 p.m. deadline to come back to work or the company would shut down.  The time came and went and now the company says it will announce future plans Friday morning.

Melissa White, a shipping worker says, "We're all here together, we're all here to stick together and we're not going anywhere.  We're not going inside until they negotiate or just come back with something."

Right now, Local 19 employees don't know what's next.  But the union represents 125 local workers.  Hostess says those workers and 18-thousand others nationwide will be out of a job it they can't reach a deal.

The company's website blames the striking workers for the plans to liquidate saying, "union leadership initiated the nationwide strikes knowing full well they would force Hostess Brands to begin permanently closing bakeries and perhaps, the entire company."

"The union members wanted to negotiate this contract," Mark Popovich, who works in shipping said.  "The company refused to negotiate, they gave us a last and final offer and we voted it down."

Union members say the proposed deal would drastically cut income, add costs to health care and wouldn't guarantee 8 hour days or 40 hour weeks.  But until told otherwise the workers on the picket line will stay put, hoping their jobs are safe.
