Rescue group reports dog-napping

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Workers at a local Animal Rescue group say someone may have swiped a Yorkie named Melvin from right under their noses on Friday.

Lori Friedes, President of Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet says, "A staff member went to answer a phone call, came back and the dog was missing."

The main door is always locked, so they believe someone was waiting in the lobby, walked towards the dog area in the back and snatched the pup. They believe that person fled through the back door.

Manager Lisa McKenzie says, "I mean we checked everything, even checked the crawl space just in case somebody opened it and hopped down underneath the building or something. And then all of a sudden it's like losing your child. You get in a panic mode and you're like, ughh!"

The dog's age is estimated to be between two and three. He's been micro-chipped and has been living with Save-A-Pet for almost a year. Melvin has a red, silver and gray coat.

President Lori Friedes declined to comment about surveillance tapes, but says the group is working with Toledo Police to locate the dog.

"He may be heading to Michigan or Fulton County. We do have some leads, which are being investigated."

This is the first-ever animal theft case for Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet and they hope people will keep an eye out for Melvin.

If you know anything, call the police or contact Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet at 419-537-9663.
