SOUTHFIELD, MICH. - Lourdes recorded its first program victory ever in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Lawrence Tech on the road 76-63 at the Don Ridler Fieldhouse in Southfield, Mich. in the conference opener for each school.
In the process, the Gray Wolves spoiled the first home game ever for the Blue Devils, who are in their first season of women's intercollegiate basketball.
Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) led three players in double figures with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Emily Orsini (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban H.S.) added 13 points while Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) contributed 11 points off of the bench. Ty Ali (Chicago, Ill./Rich South H.S.) had nine points and four assists.
"Tarynn played well for us again tonight with another double-double," head coach Zareth Gray said afterwards. "She was especially big in the second half (14 points, six rebounds). Tiffani Blackman gave us a good spark off of the bench as well."
Lourdes led by 10 at halftime and immediately began building upon its advantage. A 19-10 run over the first six minutes extended the lead to 19 and it eventually grew to 23, 62-39, after another 11-2 spurt midway through the stanza.
"When we built our big lead you saw us play solid defense, get some steals, and push the ball up the floor," Gray added.
Lawrence Tech (1-2, 0-1 WHAC) fought back with a 19-3 run to close within seven, 65-58, with 3:35 to play before the Gray Wolves pushed the lead back to double figures to secure the win.
"Lawrence Tech came back at us and we didn't do the things we needed to with the basketball," Gray stated. "Give them lots of credit."
In the first half, trailing by three, 13-10 with 14 minutes to play, the Gray Wolves went on their first run of the game. Ten straight points, the final four coming from Orsini put Lourdes on top by seven. An Orsini triple with 5:18 to play before intermission increased the lead to 10, and the Gray Wolves maintained that advantage into the locker room, leading 33-23.
Lourdes shot just 25.6% from the floor before the break, but was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. The Gray Wolves forced 12 Lawrence Tech turnovers in the opening 20 minutes and the Blue Devils shot just 26.1% from the field.
For the game Lourdes shot just 33.3% from the floor, but outrebounded the Blue Devils 47-41, including 22-11 on the offensive glass. The Gray Wolves scored 31 second chance points and 28 points off of 22 Lawrence Tech turnovers. Lourdes also shot 77.8% from the free throw line (21-of-27).
"This was a total team effort today," Gray concluded. "We have been stressing making layups and free throws, and we did that tonight, especially from the line in the first half."
Jackie Hood led Lawrence Tech with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Lourdes (2-2, 1-0) will continue its current six-game road trip on Tuesday evening, traveling to Michigan-Dearborn for another WHAC tilt. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Dearborn, Mich.
