Remembering the white Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

It was a Thanksgiving that stands out in weather history as the most extreme. Thanksgiving looked like Christmas and the Border Battle was nicknamed the "Blizzard Bowl". It was November 23-27th (Thanksgiving Weekend) 1950. Northwest Ohio picked up 6-12" of snow with 40 mph winds as a powerful storm system moved in from the southeast.

The border battle was being held in Columbus the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Big Ten Championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl was on the line. The only thing standing in their way was the defense of Mother Nature. The game time temperature was just above 5 degrees with wind gusts to 40 mph on top of a snow covered field. Neither team scored a touchdown. Michigan won the game with a score of 9-3 with only 27 yards gained. Looking at the Thanksgiving of year's past, we have a lot to be thankful for this year.

If a tornado threatens, get into the basement. If you don't have a basement, a small, interior room in the lowest floor of your home is relatively safe. Avoid rooms with windows. Mobile homes are not safe in a tornado.
