Pizza shops see big crowds day before Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

When you think of Thanksgiving, you always think of turkey.  But there's another food that takes top place the day before.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving ranks number four in the top five days for pizza sales. Other popular pie days include Superbowl Sunday, New Year's Eve and Day, and Halloween. Local shops say Thanksgiving eve is one of their busiest days, but ushers in great business for the holidays.

"Usually it's a very busy day. Nobody wants to cook, they're all cooking tomorrow," says Lynn Schmenk, manager at Royal Pizza Northwood.  "We're coming into a busy season now for company parties and things like that, so our business will pick up now."

National chains also saw big numbers.  Pizza Hut expected to sell about a million pizzas on Wednesday.
