New Lucas County Sheriff in town

Posted: Updated:

There's a new sheriff in town, with more than 30 years of law enforcement experience.
Sheriff Elect John Tharp ran unopposed.

Tharp is from Toledo. He went to Libbey high school, was in the military, he's a Vietnam Veteran, spent 25 years with the Toledo police department, and he joined the Sheriff's office in 1997.

He also has a masters degree in education from University of Toledo. His philosophy:

"Do unto others as you would want others to do to you and this is the way we are going to have to run the Lucas County SherIff's Office that's a philosophy I want my administrators to have," said Sheriff Elect John Tharp

Tharp admits he's has some big shoes to fill.  Sheriff James Thelb has been in office 28 years.

"He's give me a lot of great advice and he's given a lot of good advice to many many people in the community," said Tharp.

Like any other jail the sheriff's office has dealt with its fair share of problems. Tharp has set some goals.

"We have to the family test with the inmates how would we want our families treated what kind of services would we want provided if our family member was here at the Lucas county jail," said Tharp.

He admits the office is strapped for cash.

"The budgets are as such that we don't have much money for raises to compensate employees the way they should be compensated. That's happening throughout the country. So what I have to do is focus on what they have, what they need to do the job," said Tharp.

Tharp enjoys working in the community and encourages his employees to do the same.
As sheriff, he plans to continue to build on community programs supported by Sheriff Telb.
Tharp will take office in January.
