Local man enjoys Thanksgiving diabetes-free

Posted: Updated:

Many patients are now going with bariatric surgery as a way to treat Type 2 diabetes.  Here in Toledo, on local doctor has performed the surgery on about 100 people.  All of them are now off insulin.

Bill Linenkugel is one of them.  This year he is thankful for many things, especially his health.  About 9 years ago, he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.  But today, he's off of insulin, thanks to bariatric surgery.

"To me its been a good decision," he said.  "I am so very happy with my medical results through the whole thing."

Linenkugel went from three insulin shots a day to zero.  He's also taking fewer pills and learning to eat in a different way.  Right now, he's only eating 3/4 cups of food each meal.

"For the most party I would guess eventually I will be able to eat the things I couldn't before, but I'm not so sure I want to," he said.

Dr. Patrick White is the Director of Promedica Toledo Hospital's Bariatric program.  He also did Bill's surgery.  White says this isn't for everyone because it truly is a lifestyle change and patients must be committed.

"Its not a you have the operation and you're fixed," Dr. White said.  "You have the operation, follow the instructions and if you do those things you'll be alright."

For Bill, the decision was easy.  Now, he's happy and healthy and looking forward to enjoying the holidays with his growing family for years to come.

"I'm certainly glad that they've taken a turn in the right direction."
