Family thankful for baby beating the odds

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

An incredible story this Thanksgiving of a baby's fight for survival.  Olivia Renee was born at just 26 weeks but she is now healthy, growing and amazingly out of the hospital.  Her success story is especially poignant in November which is Prematurity Awareness month.

"I'm very optimistic.  They've said that usually babies this small don't do as well as she's doing.  She's just doing amazing," the thoughts of Olivia's mother Cassey Outland.

Olivia weighed in at 1 pound 14 ounces.  Her entry into the world was a whirlwind for her and mother.

"I thought I had the flu.  My blood pressure was outrageous so they put me in an ambulance and brought me here," said Outland.

She ended up at the NICU at Toledo Children's Hospital.

"I really don't remember.  I was very nervous.  I guess kind of checked myself out because I didn't want to freak out and cry because I knew it wasn't going to make a difference.  I was 26 weeks to the day," said Outland.

Unfortunately stories like Olivia's are common.  According to the March of Dimes one in eight babies is born premature.

"It's hard when a baby is sick and maybe you don't see it coming.  It can be challenging and we rush to try and take care of that bay and we hope for great outcomes," said NICU nurse Gretchen Mitchey.

Mitchey has worked at Toledo Children's hospital for 14 years and knows the struggles and the joys that can be found in NICUs.

"I feel blessed  that I can help these babies get stronger and grow and eventually go home with their families," said Mitchey.

"Babies are usually innocent victims of their circumstance.  Their moms were unable to keep them inside for a variety of reasons and delivered early or they were born with congenital abnormalities or had some sort of accident during delivery.  So they are completely innocent victims of their circumstance and they come in here for help.  So this is an easy field to get really passionate about," said doctor Howard Stein.

There is great news to report.  Olivia left the hospital Saturday at 4 pounds 12 ounces and at a doctor's appointment Tuesday, she's now up to 5 pounds 3 ounces.

We often report stories on the Ohio State Highway Patrol's K-9 unit. The dogs help Troopers find huge quantities of illegal drugs in our region every year. But between the big hits is a lot of hard work,
