INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Lourdes women's basketball team returned to the .500 mark on the season on Friday evening with a 71-63 victory over Goshen in the opening round of the Marian Thanksgiving Classic held at the PE Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
Led by 16 points from Emily Orsini (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban H.S.) and 15 points from Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.), the Gray Wolves led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
"We really played well as a team tonight," head coach Zareth Gray stated after the game. "We had lots of people step up. We did all the little things necessary to win games, hitting shots, taken charges, playing defense."
Leading 13-12 midway through the first half, Lourdes went on a 9-0 run to take a double-digit advantage. Orsini scored the first six points of the run before Tilden hit a triple at the 8:16 mark to give the Gray Wolves a 22-12 advantage. Another 12-2 run later in the half allowed Lourdes to build a 39-22 advantage at the break.
"We moved the ball well on offense and that really helped us build our lead," Gray added. "Lauren and Emily both hit some big outside shots as well."
A Tilden triple with 13:42 to play in the game gave the Gray Wolves their largest lead of the game, 55-31. Goshen answered with 10 straight points over the next three minutes to pull within 14 before Lourdes extended the lead back to 18 with nine minutes remaining.
The Maple Leafs went on a 7-0 run with under three minutes to play to cut the advantage to 10 and eventually pulled within eight in the final minute, but Lourdes would not allow Goshen to get any closer.
Lourdes shot 50% (10-of-20) from three-point range with Tilden draining five triples on the evening. Defensively, the Gray Wolves forced 27 Goshen turnovers, turning the miscues into 26 points.
"We were very active on defense," Gray stated. "We had active hands and got a few steals."
Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) led the way on the glass for the Gray Wolves, pulling down nine rebounds as Lourdes and Goshen each finished the night with 41 boards.
Tyra Carver led Goshen (0-7) with 19 points off of the bench while Jamie Stack had 10 rebounds.
"It's great to get the win tonight but now we have a quick turnaround and need to be ready to go again tomorrow," Gray concluded. "We need to bring the same effort against Marian as we had tonight."
