Imagination Station levy votes to be recounted

Posted: Updated:

Almost three weeks after Election Day, provisional ballots have reversed the failed Imagination Station levy. If it next survives a recount, Issue 26 will pass by 306 votes.

The recount will take place on December 6th at 9 a.m. at the Early Voting Center.

The results have forced an automatic recount because the difference is less than one half of one percent.

"Anytime it is this close then there is automatically a recount but it usually does not affect the outcome of the race, so the decisions today are the official results and they'll pretty much stay that way," says Jon Stainbrook, Lucas County Board of Elections.

"Every vote does count, every single vote," says Lori Hauser, Imagination Station. "So when you hear people saying it doesn't matter, it does matter. It matters to get in and seeing the process that even our local board of elections even have gone through and all the steps they've done has been terrific."

Imagination Station leaders are celebrating.

Before Monday's count, the renewal levy was losing by approximately 1,000 votes.

According to the Lucas County Board of Elections, provisional ballots boosted the Imagination Station levy in favor of passage by 306 votes.

After counting the provisionals, Lucas County voters approved the renewal levy for the science center 98,538 in favor, 98,232 against.

If the recount upholds the victory, the levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home just more than five dollars a year. It will generate more than a million dollars a year for the science center for five years.

"This is wonderful to have this kind of support but it also helps us with planning for future exhibitions and being able to still maintain a vibrant science center," says Hauser.
