More than 70 Ohio pastors are urging state lawmakers to invest in pre-kindergarten education programs.
A national non-profit group called "Shepherding the Next Generation" is urging state lawmakers to increase funding for high-quality pre-kindergarten programs.
The group is made up of 70 evangelical pastors including Defiance pastor Rick Rufenacht.
"We hear a lot of comments about those who have been in our facility. They are ready to go and they are excelling when they get to public school."
Republican Senator Cliff Hite showed his support Monday by reading to pre-schoolers.
"We notice the more ready a student is, the more able they are to read at a faster level." Hite said. "And that's what we are working on at the state and federal level."
"Shepherding the Next Generation" released a new report Monday that showed children attending pre-k were more likely than non-participants to succeed in school, go to college, get married and be employed. They also had fewer babies born out-of-wedlock.
Community leaders hope this study.will spark change in the Statehouse and the White House.
