TPS says students will meet challenge of tougher grad test

Posted: Updated:

A college prep standardized test and end-of-course exams will replace the Ohio Graduation Test for high school sophomores in the 2014/2015 school year.

The core subjects will include: English I, II, III, algebra I and II, geometry, biology , physical science, American history and American government.  Student performance on these required tests will be a part of the students' course grade.

TPS Chief Academic Officer Jim Gault says it's all part of making sure students can compete in a 21st century global economy and to ensure they are college and career ready. He's not surprised the state is doing away with the Ohio Graduation Test. The test was first implemented in 2005 to replace the 9th grade proficiency test.

"We've taken steps as far as out transformation to start the process.  So, we are anxious to see what ODE has in mind in terms of what kind of assessment they are going to give our sophomores."

He's also wants to know how much the test preparations will cost the district.

Woodward High School Principal Emilio Ramirez says, "Its going to be an even tougher test...more high stakes...but I think the kids will rise to the occasion."
