Lourdes Notes vs. Madonna/Davenport

Posted: Updated:

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Winners of five straight games, Lourdes returns to the hardwood for a pair of tough WHAC tests this week.  The Gray Wolves host Madonna on Wednesday evening at Tam-o-Shanter before traveling to nationally-ranked Davenport on Saturday for a contest against the Panthers.

Head Coach Andre Smith: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Andre Smith has a 34-35 (.493) record.  He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes is 4-1 all-time against Madonna, having played the Crusaders more than any other team in program history.  In a series that dates back to Nov. 6, 2010, the Gray Wolves have won the last four games between the two schools.  Last season Lourdes posted a 61-56 road win on Jan. 11 before downing Madonna 74-65 at Tam-o-Shanter on Feb. 11.  All five meetings have been decided by single digits.  Davenport is 3-0 all-time against Lourdes, with all three meetings coming last season.  The Panthers downed the ray Wolves 67-59 at Tam-o-Shanter on Jan. 4, 2012 before winning in Grand Rapids, Mich. 82-63 one month later.  Davenport then topped Lourdes 52-42 on Feb. 27 in the WHAC tournament championship game.

Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves continued their stellar defensive effort with a 53-31 victory at Michigan-Dearborn on Tuesday night.  Alex Davis scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Corey Harvey added 10 points and seven boards.  Lourdes outrebounded the Wolves 44-21 for the game and held Michigan-Dearborn to just 24.4% shooting for the contest.  Julius Porter led all scorers with 14 points for the Wolves.  Lourdes was scheduled to play Indiana Dabney on Saturday afternoon but the game was cancelled.

Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter the week following a 75-57 loss at NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan on Saturday but remain unbeaten in WHAC play.  Travis Schuba leads the way averaging 22.6 points per contest and leads NAIA Division II in three-pointers per game, making 5.7 per night.  Bobby Naubert adds 16.4 points per evening while Fred Williams gives Madonna three players in double figures, scoring 12.1 points per contest.

Scouting Davenport: The Panthers were ranked 11th in the nation in the NAIA preseason poll and have won four straight following a 91-85 win over #20 Cornerstone last Tuesday.  JaVontae Ford leads the way scoring 16.3 points per night while Gabe VanderJagt adds 12.7 points per game.  Dominez Burnett adds 10.6 points per game for the Panthers.  Davenport travels to Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes.

Best Start in Program History: Lourdes looks to continue its best start in program history after posting a 5-1 record in its first six games this year.  Last year the Gray Wolves did not win their sixth game until Dec. 19 against Indiana Dabney, the 14th game of the season.

Streaking: Lourdes has won five straight games, the second longest winning streak in program history.  The school record for the Gray Wolves is six straight victories from Jan. 7-25, 2012.

Looking to Return the Program to .500: Lourdes needs just one victory to move back to the .500 mark all-time since beginning basketball during the 2010-2011 season.  The Gray Wolves enter the week 34-35 all-time.  Lourdes is over .500 in WHAC play though, having posted an 11-9 mark through its first 20 games of conference play.

Playing Defense: Lourdes currently ranks tops among all of NAIA Division II allowing just 46.8 points per game this season.  The Gray Wolves have held their last five opponents to 51 points or less, and four of the six games this year have seen the opposition score 47 points or fewer against them.  Lourdes also leads the nation allowing the opponents to make just 35.8% of their attempts from the floor.

Crashing the Boards: Lourdes has outrebounded all six of its opponents this season.  The Gray Wolves rank eighth in NAIA Division II with a +11.3 rebounding margin.

Balanced Attack: Corey Harvey is the only Gray Wolf averaging in double figures this season, scoring 11.5 points per contest.  Lourdes has nine players that average 3.2 to 8.7 points per contest though, and as a team the Gray Wolves are scoring 60.8 points per night.

Lourdes Tabbed Fifth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fifth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just ahead of Aquinas, and just behind Madonna.  Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2012-2013.

Harvey Named to All-WHAC Preseason Team: Senior forward Corey Harvey has been named to the All-Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Preseason Team in a vote of the league's head coaches.  A member of the WHAC All-Newcomer Team one season ago, Harvey averaged 12.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest.  He shot 41.7% from the floor while averaging more than 28 minutes per contest.

Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season.  Serving in the leadership role for 2012-2013 are Corey Harvey and Remy Fleurima.

This and That: Eleven players are averaging 12 or more minutes this season ... Lourdes is 20th in the country averaging 10.3 steals per game ... Lourdes will not return to Tam-o-Shanter again until Jan .9 to host Northwestern Ohio.
