Seneca East Schools mourn classmates

Posted: Updated:
ATTICA, Ohio -

Students in Seneca East Schools are mourning the loss of three classmates after a deadly fire Tuesday. Olivia Bondy was a 6th grader, Jaxson Hamilton was a 2nd grader, and Linkin Hamilton was a kindergartner.

From the outside it looked  like a typical November day on the Seneca East campus  But the scene miles away on Township Road 124 near Attica makes it clear this is not a typical day.

"As I tell kids, when it's time to celebrate, let's celebrate together.  This is a time to grieve and we do this together," said Seneca East Elementary principal Brad Powers.

Powers says counselors met with students individually and in groups to talk about their feelings, all while remembering their friends.

"I think the kids have really worked together on sharing what is special about these children and sharing their favorite memories of the kids,"  said Powers.

Seneca East is a district of only about 1000 kids, a district where everyone knows everyone.  So the loss of this family is especially difficult.

"What makes this school so special is the family/community feel we have here and we knew coming in this would be a very sad day for us, a tough day to work through.   We lost a great family, three great kids, Linkin, Olivia, Jaxon, three very special students here at Seneca East, "  said Powers.

Another big message at Seneca East was fire safety.   Administrators were urging kids to ask their parents about smoke detectors and having an escape plan from their home.
