Officer charged in girl's slaying faces hearing

DETROIT (AP) - A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for a Detroit tactical unit officer charged in the shooting death of a 7-year-old girl during a police raid that was being taped by a reality TV show crew.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says the hearing will be Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court. Joseph Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Aiyana Stanley-Jones was killed in May 2010 when members of a special response team burst into her home in search of a man wanted for an earlier murder. An A&E cable network crew was shadowing police on the raid.

Detroit police have said Weekley's gun accidentally discharged after he was bumped or jostled by the girl's grandmother.

Aiyana's family has filed civil lawsuits against the city and police department.
