Perrysburg Twp. police beefing up patrols through New Year

Posted: Updated:

As more drivers hit the road for Christmas shopping and parties, Perrysburg Township Police are stepping up patrols for a month-long holiday traffic blitz.

Starting Monday and running through New Years, police in Perrysburg Township are beefing up patrols and working overtime to keep roads safe for families to travel this holiday season.

"I feel like people do get kind of tense because you know the police is out," says Raphael Neal, a BGSU student who works in Perrysburg.

Police are focusing extra attention on high traffic roads like the busy retail area along US Route 20, a popular spot for Christmas shoppers.

"I try to avoid the shopping areas," says Chris Heathcote, a driver who lives in Perrysburg. "If I can purchase online, I do that."

Throughout December, Perrysburg Township Police are also targeting State Route 25, State Route 795, State Route 65, and Oregon Road.

Police are looking for drunk drivers, people speeding, or not wearing seat belts.

This is the sixth consecutive year that the Perrysburg Township Police Department has held this holiday traffic enforcement safety blitz. It is paid for with the help of a state grant.

Drivers hitting the road today say the traffic congestion and head aches aren't as big an issue this holiday season as budgeting for gas prices.

"You do have to consider your gas," says Neal. "I'm from Detroit so I have to go back and forth a lot of times."

"Most of my family is around the Cleveland area so usually it's fill up the van with gas, drive there. Then once you're there, filling up to get back. It's definitely a pain," says Heathcote.
