Patton gets life for murder of mother, son

Posted: Updated:

He was found guilty of murdering a mother and her son on Friday. Daurin Patton learned his fate Monday evening, and emotions in the courtroom ran high.

He received two consecutive life sentences for the crime.

Investigators say Patton shot and killed Veronica Serrano and 14-year-old Timothy Blair last November during an attempted robbery.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Dean Mandros didn't hold back, as he laid out the sentence.

He said, "A young woman and her son gunned down literally on the steps to their own home by an assassin with military rifle."

Patton, 27, sat quietly next to his attorney.  He showed little reaction to the sentence, however he did apologize to the victim's families and said he planned to appeal.

"I want to ask the Serrano family for forgiveness," he said.  "I am being accused of these charges and also being convicted.  I still proclaim my innocence."

Family members on both sides of the room fought back tears.  A spokesperson for the Serrano family also addressed the judge, saying, "my sister died a meaningless death trying to protect her kids, as any on of us would do."

Judge Mandros defended his decision, saying, "like a wild animal you have to be restrained.  You have to be kept apart from those of us in the community who abide by the laws of this society."

Patton also faces a 10 year sentence for aggravated robbery and a 3 year sentence for the gun specification, on top of the life terms.

He's expected to be in court again in January on an unrelated case.
