Breaking their silence for the first time, the family of the woman shot and killed by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher said Monday their "hearts are truly broken" and asked for privacy while they grieve the loss of two loved ones.

The shocking violent act by an Kansas City Chief NFL player is shedding light on domestic violence. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, women who leave their abusers are at 75 percent greater risk of being injury or killed than those who stay.

Experts say it's embarrassing to tell your friends you're being hit or someone is saying vicious things to you.  They say it's important to know warning signs and when to get help.

While domestic violence can be found in any neighborhood, experts say the warning signs can vary.

"Keep your eyes open to the signs we're talking about someone who seems depressed or moody. A girlfriend who's checking her phone a lot or getting a lot of phone calls from her husband or boyfriend.  Who's afraid to go out with her girlfriends because of the repercussions of what will happened if she does something he doesn't like," said Therapist Erin Wiley.

Over the weekend, a Kansas City Chiefs football player shot and killed his girlfriend then drove to Arrowhead stadium where he shot and killed himself in front of his coaches. NFL fans were stunned. Wiley says domestic violence is not just a NFL problem it's a problem in homes from state to state .

"Usually when someone is an abuser they tend to have an angry streak and they are usually very insure so that insecurity will manifest in controlling their victim they will go through their phone following them might put a GPS on their car and track them," said Wiley.

According to Bureau of Justice statistics, an average of three women are murdered by their lover every day in the united states, meaning another nine women are potentially dead  since the football player killed his girlfriend. Wiley says we've seen the headlines right here in our area. She's seen an increase in depression, often from a disorder called "SAD."

"Seasonal affective disorder there's very little sun, and that can cause certain neuro transmitters in your brain to not be as frequently produced. so you van just feel sad when the winter comes." said Wiley.

Experts say statistics show domestic violence is one of the top reasons for divorces.
