13abc launched the "Hope for the Holidays" toy drive last year to provide the Salvation Army a boost in helping families during a challenging economy. Nearly 8,000 new bicycles, games, dolls and other toys were donated.
It doesn't take a lot to make a big difference...and that's a lesson Franciscan Academy students took to heart. Two weeks ago, the Sylvania students started collecting toys in their homeroom classes for 13abc's annual 'Hope for the Holidays' toy drive. Fourteen days later, they'd collected more than five big boxes of gifts to give the Salvation Army.
"It's so exciting to see how excited they are to donate," says Janna Van Zee with the Salvation Army. "They really take a passion, and get excited about the toys and excited that they get to help out too."
"When these children get the toys over here, they're going to be very happy that they got something for Christmas," says student Katharine Logan.
Holiday help requests are pouring into the local Salvation Army office, they've received 1,400 applications so far. With the need so great, leaders say each donation is appreciated, especially from the youngest givers.
"The more toys we can get, the better," says Van Zee.
"Toys for Christmas is something I think all kids look forward to," says Franciscan student Adam Maivach.
"The children look forward to this kind of thing and it makes them really happy when they're able to have really nice things," says another student, Emma Nichols.
You can drop gifts off with any of our sponsors: Salvation Army, Hylant Group, Vito's Pizza and Subs, Gallon, Takacs, Boisooneault, and Schaffer, and Walmart. You can also bring gifts to our studio, which is located at the corner of Richards and Dorr streets.
The toy drive kicks off this Friday and runs through December 21st.
