Walleye lose 8-5 in Evansville

Posted: Updated:

EVANSVILLE, IND. - Toledo scored five times, but lost 8-5 in Evansville. Toledo has a record of 13-9-0-1 and is 7-4-0-1 on the road this season.

The IceMen would start fast as they would go up 1-0 2:12 into the first period when Nathan Moon beat Kent Simpson with a wrist shot. Toledo would tie the game at 4:37 when Luke Glendening ripped a shot that went off of the shoulder of Evansville net minder Paul Karpowich and fell into the back of the net. Terry Broadhurst and Phil Rauch picked up assists on the 13th goal of the year from Glendening.

"Limiting turnovers was the key for us going into this game," said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. "In Sunday's game it was the main reason why we lost, so that had to be corrected for this game. They came at us hard tonight in the first period, but we weathered that storm and responded with one of our own. That 45 second stretch in the second period was our undoing tonight."

The IceMen would regain the lead at 13:58 of the first period when Wade MacLeod ripped a wrist shot past Simpson. Toledo would respond again at 15:38 when Willie Coetzee ripped a one-timer past Karpowich for his 9th goal of the year (Joey Martin and Kyle Rogers). The same line would give Toledo its first lead of the game at 18:57 of the first when Martin tipped a Coetzee pass through the legs of Karpowich. Rogers also collected an assist on the second goal of the year from Joey Martin.

Toledo would start the second period with another goal from Joey Martin. Adam Hobson hit Martin with the pass and Joey roofed a wrist shot past goaltender Allen York who came on to start the second period. Toledo would lead 4-2 from much of the second. The IceMen would score three goals in 45 seconds from 14:56 to 15:41 in the second to give Evansville a 5-4 lead after two periods.

The IceMen continued their onslaught into the third period with goals at 1:37 and 2:58 of the period. Toledo would get a power play goal from Wes O'Neill at 7:10 of the third, his sixth of the season (Nestrasil and Youds). Evansville would take on another to finish the scoring.

Walleye Notes:  Goaltender Kent Simpson made 18 saves and is 5-6-0-1 on the season. Jordan Pearce came into the game in the third period and made 7 saves on 9 shots. Toledo is 8-7-0-0 against teams from the North Division this year.  Forward Terry Broadhurst extended his point streak to six games with his assist in the first period.
