Lourdes Rally Not Quite Enough as Gray Wolves Fall at Concordia

Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR - Lourdes University cut a 14-point deficit with 10 minutes to play to two on Saturday afternoon, but could not tie or take the lead as the Gray Wolves dropped a 68-63 decision to Concordia (Mich.) at the Cardinal Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"Got down late and couldn't come back," head coach Andre Smith stated after the game.  "We missed a lot of free throws (Lourdes went 13-for-23 at the line)."

The Gray Wolves trailed 52-38 before Remy Fleurima (North Lauderdale, Fla./Coconut Creek H.S.) made a three and Corey Harvey (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby H.S.) converted a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to nine.  A 10-2 Lourdes run made it 57-53 Concordia following Alex Davis' (Cleveland, Ohio/Nordonia H.S.) jumper with five minutes to play in the game.

Davis then pulled Lourdes to within two, 63-61, with just over a minute to play after splitting a pair of free throws, but Andrew Patrick answered with a basket to put the Cardinals back up four.  Concordia added three free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

They are a good team and can shoot the ball," Smith added.  That makes it tough to get back in games.  Give them all the credit in the world.  They stuck to their game plan.  Just like most other games in this league, it was a tough game that went down to the final two or three possessions."

Lourdes trailed just 14-13 midway through the first half before the hosts went on an 11-2 run on the way to building a 31-20 halftime advantage.

Davis led the Gray Wolves with 16 points while Harvey added 14 more.  Both players also grabbed six rebounds each while Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) pulled down a team-high eight boards.

The Gray Wolves got off to a slow start shooting from the floor, connecting on just 26.7% from the field in the opening 20 minutes while falling behind at the break.

Patrick led Concordia (4-8, 3-3 WHAC) with 16 points while John Schaeffer and Josh Fugate added 14 points each for the Cardinals.

Lourdes outrebounded Concordia 45-36 on the afternoon, including 21-11 on the offensive end.

Lourdes (6-4, 3-3) will have a week off before returning to action next Saturday when the Gray Wolves entertain Indiana Tech.  The game will be played at Adrian College in Adrian, Mich. with tip-off slated for 3 p.m.
