Santa's helper sets sights on helping hurricane victims

Posted: Updated:

He's making a list and checking it twice. This year one of Santa's helpers in Toledo is on a mission to help Hurricane Sandy victims.

Santa plans on leaving the "North Pole" early for the special stop.

Normally, old St. Nick is busy hearing little ones wishes up until Christmas Eve but this year one of Santa's helpers is making a special trip.

Gregg Blankley has been helping Santa for the past 16 years. He is also a Red Cross volunteer who spent weeks in New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy. He says the number of children spending Christmas without a tree or even a present, breaks his heart.

"These children have a need, they're not going to be home for Christmas, they are worried and wondering if Santa is going to find them, says Blankley."

Santa wants to make sure every little girl and boy affected by Hurricane Sandy has a present even if they no longer have a home.

So he is leaving for the coast on December 22nd. The Red Cross is armed with the tools to guide his sleigh.

"They'll have lists of people who are displaced, I'm gonna make it to as many homes or hotels as possible, says Blankley."

With less than two weeks til the trip, Santa needs money to fund the special stop. He's hoping Northwest Ohio steps in to make sure Santa Claus really does come to every town, especially those hit by disaster.
