Southern Michigan blizzard anniversary

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

So far this winter season the snow hasn't piled up, but 12 years ago the snowfall was setting records all across the Great Lakes region. For some spots around Northwest Ohio and Southern Michigan more snow fell in December of 2000 than in any other December on record. The storm that started it all took place 12 years ago on December 11, 2000. A powerful storm producing 60 mph wind gusts ripped through northwest Ohio. Big wet snowflakes started to fall and add up quickly only to change over to freezing rain and eventually rain for most of Ohio. Conditions dropped off significantly in southern Michigan. Adrian, MI had a thick glaze of ice with another 5" of snowfall on top of it. The precipitation stayed all snow from Grand Rapids to Lansing with about 16" of snow accumulation and strong winds gusting over 40 mph.

After years of talk, Toledo's first dog park is moving forward. An official groundbreaking for the Glass City Dog Park is set for August. There are more than 62,000 registered pups in Lucas County but there is no place for dogs to run freely. In a matter of weeks, that's changing. "This is about quality of life and improving Toledo," says Steve Serchuk, a board member with Toledo Unleashed. Serchuk works with the non-profit Toledo Unleashed. They've worked to build a dog park for five yea...
